If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy, you may be hearing about the abortion pill and wondering what it involves. It is an option discussed in early pregnancy, but the name can make it sound simpler than it is. Understanding how it works and what it involves can help you make a more informed decision.
If you are contemplating your options, reach out to First Choice Women’s Center. Here, we can offer you free and confidential care, so you can have all the facts to make your decision without judgment.
The Abortion Pill
The abortion pill involves two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, taken in sequence:
- The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone needed for a pregnancy to continue developing.
- The second drug, misoprostol, is taken 24 to 48 hours later. It causes the uterus to contract, leading to cramping and vaginal bleeding as the pregnancy and related tissue are expelled.
This method is FDA-approved through 10 weeks of gestation, which is why gestational age is an important factor in determining what options may be appropriate at different stages.
What You Could Experience
Every woman’s experience is different, but cramping and vaginal bleeding are expected effects of this process.
Bleeding can range from heavier-than-period flow to passing clots. Cramping is often described as strong and may vary in intensity from woman to woman. Other side effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills, headache, or fatigue.
Because experiences can vary, it is important to have access to medical guidance if questions or complications arise during the process.
Risks and Important Considerations
There are potential risks to be aware of. These may include heavy or prolonged bleeding, infection, or an incomplete abortion that may require additional medical care.
If a pregnancy is located outside the uterus, this is known as an ectopic pregnancy and requires its own course of prompt medical treatment. The abortion pill is not appropriate in this case.
For this reason, a medical evaluation, including a limited ultrasound, is recommended before making decisions, as it can provide important information about gestational age, pregnancy location, and any potential concerns that may affect your health and safety.
