After receiving a positive pregnancy test result, receiving an ultrasound scan is the next step.
An ultrasound is a simple scan that confirms your pregnancy and provides other essential information.
How Ultrasounds Work
Ultrasound imaging, also known as sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of the body.
During pregnancy, these sound waves are directed into the body using a handheld device called a transducer. The sound waves bounce off the structures in the body, and the transducer collects the returning echoes. Real-time images appear on a computer screen.
There are two main types of ultrasounds used during pregnancy:
- Transvaginal Ultrasound: This type is often used in early pregnancy. The transducer is inserted into the vagina, providing closer proximity to the uterus and clearer images of the developing embryo or fetus.
- Abdominal Ultrasound: This type is typically used later in pregnancy. It involves moving the transducer over the abdomen. A special gel is applied to the skin to help conduct the sound waves and improve image quality.
Why Ultrasounds Are Important During Pregnancy
No matter what pregnancy decision you’re considering, an ultrasound is an essential first step toward getting the information you need to know to stay safe.
During pregnancy, getting an ultrasound will allow you to:
- Confirm Your Pregnancy: An early ultrasound can confirm the pregnancy, determine the location of the embryo (ensuring it’s not an ectopic pregnancy), and check for a heartbeat to verify it’s progressing and you haven’t miscarried.
- Estimate Your Due Date: Ultrasounds help determine gestational age and due date by measuring the size of the embryo or fetus. Accurate dating is crucial for understanding what pregnancy options are available (for example, medical abortion is only FDA-approved if your pregnancy is ten or fewer weeks of gestation).
